Dependent Spouse & Child

Dependent Spouse Visa UK 2022 | Application Guidance

If you are a holder of a Tier 2 visa and you want to apply for a Dependent Spouse Visa, you are allowed to bring your family with you. With this visa, you will be able to study and work within specific restrictions in the United Kingdom. Before you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, which would enable you to remain in the UK indefinitely, you need to have lived there for a period of five years first.

In addition, those who are dependent on a British citizen or settled person but who do not currently reside in the UK may be asked to migrate there if they are a spouse, parent, or child of the person who is a British citizen or settled person. This Dependent Spouse Visa may be extended for a total of two years and six months after its initial validity period.

You need a family visa to live with a family member in the UK for more than 6 months.

Applying from outside the UK

You can apply for a family visa to live with your:

  • spouse or partner
  • fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner
  • child

Extending your family visa

You can apply to extend your stay with your family member if you’re already in the UK on a family visa.

You might also need to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application.
